BGShort Bowel Syndrome (SBS)
A major loss of bowel length.
A complex absorption disorder, after surgical removal of a large part of the small intestine (Crohn's disease, cancer, trauma).
With less bowel, the body absorbs less water, vitamins and nutrients: abundant chronic diarrhoea, malnutrition, and sometimes nutrition by infusion, in a specialised centre.

Definition
Short bowel syndrome occurs when a large part of the small intestine has been removed. Absorption of nutrients and water drops, with frequent, liquid stools.
Causes
A major surgical resection, after severe Crohn's disease, a vascular accident of the bowel or a trauma.
Diagnosis
- Surgical history and nutritional assessment.
Treatments
An adapted diet, supplements, and for some people nutrition by infusion. The remaining bowel adapts gradually; medicines can improve absorption. Follow-up takes place in a specialised centre.
